I write this column Wednesday afternoon with the election results still very fresh. We just wrapped up today’s lunch gathering at UUFE, where we had a chance to share our feelings following the election.
I know I didn’t sleep well last night, and several others reported the same. In just 12 hours my reactions have gone from surprise (though I had recently sensed this outcome was likely), to a recurring “Is this real?” check-in, to anger at those immediately blaming the loss on VP Harris.
Others today shared their reactions of frustration, anger, disgust, sadness, and worries for fundamental safety, and more. Many expressed concerns for children and youth and what they might be experiencing, and the implications for their short-term and long-term futures.
What are you feeling today? What is your early reaction to the results?
We each have our own way of walking through hard challenges. Some focus on basic care for self and those closest to them. Some are drawn to analyzing what happened and why. Many find strength in sharing, while others need to process alone. Some are already focused on next steps, particularly ways to care for those most vulnerable in light of the results, or sense they will be ready for action soon.
Elections are about our values, laws and policies and the leaders surrounding us. We want to elect leaders we can trust. Even if we don’t agree with their views, we’d like to trust their integrity and commitment. Yet, the results from this election raise deep questions about our shared values as a nation, trust, basic freedom, safety and leadership.
The results are still fresh. As a community what we can offer one another is connection and care. We have one another and that matters.
If anything feels useful in the next few days or weeks, please be in touch.
In care,
Rev. Sue
