As part of this fall’s Social Justice Committee project, David Stevens and others from our congregation are writing short essays looking at democracy in the US. The latest essay, “The Supreme Court” is available on the UUFE website. In this essay, David explores the Supreme Court and the court system, which were originally designed as the way the Constitution included a check on overreach by the Executive and Legislative branches. Has the picking of judges become so political that it is no longer fulfilling this important restraint?
The theme for the Social Justice Common Read this year is Our Democracy, with various activities culminating in a UUFE service in October exploring the book On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century by Timothy Snyder.
