Inside the Board Room

All congregants are welcome to attend general meetings of the Board of Trustees. We hold meetings the second Monday of each month from 6:00 to 7:30 in the Archer-Shee Room. There are always extra chairs, so come in and make yourself comfortable. The Board of Trustees has an “open door policy.”

If you are unable to make it to a meeting, but would like to know the agenda, you may always read the minutes provided by our clerk, Liz Hausburg, available in a binder in the library. The financial statements are posted monthly on the bulletin board, and the monthly Minister’s report is included with the minutes. We think you would find it interesting reading.

Each Board member “mentors” one or two committees and makes periodic reports from “their” committee/s. Committee chairs also attend meetings to make reports directly to the Board. In our current governance structure, committees are directly responsible to the Board. and committee chairs are appointed by the President/s in consultation with the Board.

There is always a financial report by our Treasurers, Nancy Sawyer and Jean Rhian. Occasionally, expenditures beyond the budgeted amounts are discussed and voted upon. Anything that represents expenditure more than 5% of the total budget requires approval by a vote of the congregation. That’s just to let you know that we don’t spend large amounts of money without congregational approval, once the budget is approved at the annual meeting.

Over the last several months, the Board has been considering the recommendations made by Rev. David Pyle, following his assessment of our congregation. (Please see our earlier article.) He is the Congregational Life Consultant from the Central East Region of the Unitarian Universalist Association. As a Board, we have been reading Simple Church. Rev. Pyle recommended that we simplify our governance structure and lines of communication to help the management of UFE run more effectively. When the business of the church runs effectively, there is more time for fun and spiritual connections. That’s our goal. Copies of Simple Church are available to borrow from the library.

As part of our learning from reading Simple Church the Board is considering a new focus. A new mission statement is being crafted to guide all that happens at UUFE. The new mission statement and coordinating changes at UUFE will be shared with you in the coming months. We hope you’ll welcome the new focus.

Ann Davis, and Mark Peach, Co-Presidents of the Board of Trustees
