OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAUUFE has been a part of the Talbot County Interfaith Coalition Against Hunger since its inception over thirteen years ago.  To help combat the increasing problem of hunger in the community, this group of nine local faith congregations decided to expand on the winter Wednesday soup kitchen that was already running at Asbury United Methodist Church.  We began making and delivering lunches throughout the year to people in Easton.  During four winter months, Asbury provides soup and bread, with other congregations helping with desserts and fruit. On  the rest of the year, each congregation acts independently on the assigned week and members of Asbury participate weekly with each group. Approximately 95-100 people, who are referred by the county Health Department and faith groups, receive lunches every Wednesday.

Coalition volunteers also bring lunches for each weekday to the six people in the Ridgeway House shelter in Easton.  The shelter is run by the Neighborhood Services Center.  Our turn, shared with Grace Lutheran Church, is every 2nd and 4th Sunday for their Monday lunches.

Each November at Asbury UMC, Thanksgiving dinners are prepared and delivered.  We served about 175 people for Thanksgiving, 2016. Volunteers purchase food for the shelter lunches and Thanksgiving dinners.  Our Social Justice Committee pays about $520 per year for the cost of UUFE’s Wednesday lunches.
