Talbot Mentors matches at-risk children in Talbot County one on one with adult volunteer mentors to support those young people through friendship, guidance, and education. Participants meet for 1-2 hours a week. Mentoring activities include eating together, doing homework, playing sports, and visiting new places. Mentoring Services are based on many prerequisites for effective mentoring programs: volunteer screening, mentor training, matching procedures, and ongoing support that involves the mentor, child, and parent/caregiver. Talbot Mentors provides additional support to its mentees and mentors through its Enrichment Services: academic assistance and tutoring, mentee-mentor group activities, service learning projects, and summer camp scholar-ships. Since 2000, the program has increased the number of children matched with mentors from 12 mentees to 68 youth ages 8-18 today. Of these mentoring relationships, at least 75% are in their second year or beyond; some as many as 9 years!
