Finishing the School Year in the RE Wing

It’s hard to believe we have arrived here–already at the end of the RE school year at UUFE. It’s been a transitional year for many of us. It’s the first year we’ve had Cailyn Thomas, a consistent staff person keeping watch over the playroom every Sunday, and it’s the first year that I’ve worked in the Coordinator of Religious Education job. Additionally, our RE committee has slowly started to rebuild with new members and new energy.

Throughout the year we’ve held several Friday night youth events, Sunday morning Teen Church Gatherings, a handful of Saturday evening family events, a successfully OWL program for teens, and a Sunday morning elementary classroom that occasionally topped out at 20 kids. Our RE hallway has been abuzz with kids playing games together, sharing joys and concerns, and learning more about each other and the values that define our community.

But we’re not quite done! This month we will have two big events–RE Sunday on June 5th and a family camp-out on Saturday, June 11th. RE Sunday is an annual service that involves many of our volunteer teachers, families, and kids. We celebrate the year together and share with the congregation some of the things we’ve learned. We also take time to shower our volunteers with gratitude for the time they’ve dedicated to making it a special year for our children, and we recognize older youth who will bridge into the next phases of their lives.

On June 11th, we will come together in the fellowship’s back yard for a family camp-out event. Families are invited to bring their camping gear for a sleepover. We’ll grill some dinner and enjoy s’mores over a bonfire. We’ll play games, tell stories, and maybe take a walk on the nature trail.

Peace Camp will return to UUFE for the third summer! Children between the ages of 5 and 11 are invited to join us July 27th, 28th, and 29th from 10:00 AM through 12:00 PM. As in years past, we’ll focus on music, crafts, and movement activities while learning about peace makers and ways of resolving conflict peacefully. Register soon as space is limited!

Lastly, we hope to continue to see our families throughout the summer months. Cailyn will continue to be in the playroom, and we will have volunteers teaching the kids about peacemakers each Sunday from July 12th through August 28th. July 3rd is the only Sunday we will not have any sort of RE programming.

Thanks so much for being part of our fun and vibrant RE community!

See you on Sunday,

Patty Hamsher, CRE
